Circles of Strength
Bereavement Support Groups
These year-round community-based groups were created by our organization’s founder, Dr. Heather Mohan, in 1998 on the North Shore of Vancouver, BC. We now have groups operating both on the North Shore and in New Westminster, which serve families from a variety of regions including; Burnaby, Delta, New Westminster, Surrey, Squamish, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, North Vancouver and more. Some of our dedicated volunteers have been assisting with these groups since 1998.
The Circles of Strength program provide regular opportunities for bereaved families and individuals to connect, to share their experiences in a supportive environment, and to gain skills that can assist in coping with grief. All groups are facilitated by experienced counselors who are assisted by trained volunteers. Participants have the option to sign up for a single session, or for the year-long series.
In North Vancouver groups are currently offered for children (ages 6 to 12 yrs.) and adults. In New Westminster groups are currently offered for children (ages 6 to 12 yrs.), youth (ages 13 – 21) and adults. Children/Youth have a chance to talk about their losses and to use expressive art therapy modalities (music therapy, art therapy, drama & play therapy) to share their grief. The adult group provides participants a space to talk and to focus on their own grief process as well as the parenting challenges associated with their losses.
The 2017 season of the Circles of Strength program includes meetings in two locations; North Vancouver and New Westminster. The North Vancouver group is offered one Sunday afternoon each month from 2:30 PM – 5 PM. The New Westminster group is offered one Saturday afternoon each month from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM.
